I love recipes that make it easy to enjoy nourishing, from-scratch foods without making things complicated. This hot chocolate uses simple pantry staples and comes together in just a few minutes. You can even use homemade chocolate syrup if you prefer to keep a batch on hand for quick hot chocolate whenever the craving strikes.

Why You’ll Love This Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

  • A nourishing twist on hot chocolate. Bone broth adds protein and collagen-derived amino acids, while raw milk makes this drink creamy and satisfying.
  • Made with simple ingredients. You only need a handful of ingredients to make this homemade hot chocolate, and you can adjust the chocolate and sweetness to your liking.
  • A great way to use broth. If you are like me, and always have jars of homemade broth in the fridge, this is a delicious way to consume it.
  • Naturally sweetened. Pure maple syrup adds sweetness without needing refined white sugar.
  • Easy to customize. Add a dash of cinnamon, a pinch of cayenne, some dark chocolate shavings, or a generous handful of homemade honey marshmallows to make it your own.
  • Ready in minutes. This is an easy, comforting drink to make on a chilly morning or evening when you want something warm and chocolatey.

Bone Broth Hot Chocolate Ingredients

  • Bone broth – Use plain, unseasoned bone broth for the best flavor. Store-bought works, but making your own broth is so simple! I always keep a big stock of homemade broth in my fridge to pull from throughout the week.
  • Raw milk – I use fresh raw goat milk from our homestead, but you can use whatever milk you prefer. Whole milk makes a rich, creamy hot chocolate.
  • Cocoa powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder gives this drink its chocolate flavor. Add more if you prefer a richer chocolate taste.
  • Pure maple syrup: Maple syrup sweetens the hot chocolate and pairs beautifully with the cocoa. Adjust the amount to suit your taste.
  • Vanilla extract – A splash of vanilla rounds out the chocolate flavor.
  • Optional toppings: Homemade honey marshmallows are my favorite addition! A sprinkle of cinnamon, a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper, or shaved dark chocolate is also delicious.

Equipment/Ingredients I Use

One of my favorite places to stock our pantry is Azure Standard. Since I focus on whole foods and avoiding processed ingredients, buying many of our staples in bulk helps us save money while keeping high-quality ingredients on hand. If you’ve never ordered from Azure Standard before, you can shop through my link here.

How to make Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

  1. Add the broth and milk to a small saucepan. If using chilled homemade broth that is jelled, warm over low heat till melted.
  2. Next, add the cocoa powder and maple syrup. Mix with a frother or whisk till combined.
  3. Warm over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot and steaming. Do not boil.
  4. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Taste and adjust the cocoa or maple syrup as desired.
  5. Pour into mugs and top with homemade honey marshmallows, a dash of cinnamon, or a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper.

Tips for the Best Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

Choose a mild broth. The flavor of your broth can make a difference in the finished drink. A mild, unseasoned broth allows the chocolate to shine.

Adjust to your taste. Everyone likes their hot chocolate a little differently. Add extra cocoa powder for a deeper chocolate flavor or a little more maple syrup for additional sweetness.

Whisk the cocoa well. Cocoa powder can clump when added directly to liquid. Whisk it thoroughly so you end up with a smooth, creamy drink.

Warm gently. Heat the mixture until hot, but avoid boiling it. This helps prevent the milk from scorching.

Can I Use Homemade Chocolate Syrup?

Absolutely! If you already have a batch of homemade chocolate syrup in the refrigerator, you can use it instead of measuring out the cocoa powder and maple syrup separately. Start 2tbsp, stir it into your hot chocolate, and add more until you reach your preferred chocolate flavor and sweetness.

My homemade chocolate syrup is made with cocoa powder and maple syrup, making it a convenient option to keep on hand for hot chocolate, drizzling over homemade ice cream, or adding to other chocolate treats.

How to Serve Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

Pour your hot chocolate into your favorite mug and enjoy it while warm. I love topping mine with homemade honey marshmallows, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or a tiny pinch of cayenne for a little warmth.

It’s especially nice on a cold day when you’re craving something cozy but want to make it from scratch with ingredients you already have at home.
