Why I Wrote My Little Farm | The Story Behind My Children’s Book
What started as a simple question from my kids turned into writing and self-publishing My Little Farm, a children’s book inspired by our own farm animals. As a homeschooling mom, books are a big part of our days. My kids have always loved curling up with a good story, but one day they asked for something I couldn’t find on our bookshelf—a book about their farm animals.
Not long after, my uncle, who is an author, mailed us one of his children’s books. As we read it together, my kids were fascinated. They wanted to know how he wrote a book and if anyone could become an author.
Then came the question that changed everything:
“Mom, can you write us a book about our animals?”
As parents, we all have moments when our own advice comes back to us. One lesson I try to teach my children is to never say, “I can’t do that.” Instead, we say, “I don’t know how to do that… yet.” Then we learn how.
So when they asked if I could write a book, my first thought was NOPE! “I’ve never written a children’s book before. I have no clue how to even start!” But they echoed my own words back to me. “But you can learn how, right?”
Together, we learned. Many late nights. Many moments of “I need to take a break and go outside a while.”
I taught myself how to write a children’s story, illustrate and design the pages, and navigate the world of self-publishing. It was a challenge, but it was also one of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever taken on.

When the first copy of My Little Farm book arrived, seeing my children’s faces light up as they recognized their own animals on the pages made every late night and learning curve worthwhile! It quickly became one of their favorite books because it wasn’t just another story—it was their story.
Of course, it didn’t stop there.
Before long, they were asking if they could color the animals from the book. And since we’re a homeschooling family, I couldn’t resist taking it one step further. My kids love coloring pages, mazes, word searches, matching games, and simple educational activities, so creating My Little Farm Coloring & Activity Book felt like the perfect companion.
My hope is that these books inspire children to fall in love with farm life, spark their curiosity, and create special memories with the people they love most.
And if they inspire another child—or another parent—to say, “I don’t know how… yet.” Then they’ve done even more than I ever imagined.
